<article_plain>Most people living in Berlin tell me that they're sick of the hipsters, particularly "Mitte-hipsters." But I have a different understanding of the word "hip": Berlin is definitely not a hipster place compared to the world's major cities. The only thing that would make me sick in Berlin is the lack of sun. But I have such lovely people around me, I just forget about the sun...</article_plain>
<about_text_plain>Another "boring" Berlin stereotype: Graphic designer and DJ Sven Hausherr grew up in Zurich's hip hop scene until he found his way from graffiti to graphic design—from rap to the wild range of good dance floor music.

Hausherr currently works at QVEST magazine alongside freelance projects, such as the Rap History nights where he plays host as Svenster together with his partner Slick Gizzle. Hausherr describes his music style as simply as he does his design style: fun! Visit his website to learn more about Sven.</about_text_plain>

<article_plain>Lars Eidinger is a rare breed in Berlin—and not just because the actor and director of Schaubühne plays the lead in Everyone Else, the only German movie showing at this year's festival. Eidinger is a genuine Berliner, you see, the opposite of that rapidly multiplying breed of Zugezogene (Berlin implants) infiltrating the city and chasing dreams of love, happiness, success or 300-Euro rent.

His work is equally unique. The ruggedly handsome 33-year-old interprets old and contemporary roles beyond the expected. He can be racy and provocative; sometimes, outrageously so. In 2006, the actor comically spoke to the audience through his masked genitalia when playing multiple roles in Shakespeare's "Midsummer's Night Dream." In Hamlet, in which Eidinger plays the titular character, he delivers his "to be or not to be" monologue earnestly and movingly—and in a barely-there lace slip. He joins other heavyweight talents that make Berlin fertile grounds for experimenting—exciting directors like Pollesch, Castorf, Ostermaier and Gosch all reside here.

We asked the actor to break down the proverbial fourth wall and to inform us of his daily routine outside of contemplating comedy and tragedy, limelight and rehearsals. Below, the West Berlin-heavy list of Eidinger's favorite hangouts in town.</article_plain>
<about_text_plain>Lars Eidinger is an actor based in Berlin. Raised in a terraced housing estate in Marienfelde, he moved to Charlottenburg upon receiving his first engagement at Deutsches Theater in his second year at Ernst Busch Actor's school. After graduation, Eidinger was hired by the Schaubühne, where he still works and acts today.</about_text_plain>

<article_plain>Fresh from his studies in Düsseldorf, conceptual artist Thomas Rentmeister arrived in Berlin in 1988 with a high-profile Philip Morris scholarship in hand. Later that year Rentmeister had his first solo exhibition at the now defunct Vincentz Sala Galerie, where, fresh from the fall of the Wall, East Berliners made their way to their first-ever West Berlin gallery opening.

Fifteen years later, Rentmeister, who's work has been has been coined "dirty Minimalism," moved back to the once divided city only to find massive redevelopment. In his soothsaying words, he predicts that "it will take another 50 years for the city to become gritty again."

A regular at many Berlin haunts, his favorite spot in the city is his Weissensee studio. He describes it as one "like you see in the movies, with beautiful rooms and lots of light." Coincidentally, the space was a former film studio, Filmstadt Weissensee, in which parts of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) was shot and Marlene Dietrich and Fritz Lang both flexed their silver screen prowess.

In the footsteps of the cinematic stars and in the shadow of the socialized laundry of the DDR (which inhabited the space before the artist studios), Rentmeister has made a name for himself. While the artist celebrates exhibitions around the world, he points readers in the right direction here in Berlin.</article_plain>
<about_text_plain>Born in Westfalen, Germany, in 1964, Thomas Rentmeister attended the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under the guidance of Günther Uecker and Alfonso Hüppi. His work has been shown around the world with notable solo exhibitions at Centraal Museum, Utrecht; Haus am Waldsee, Berlin; Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam; and Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin. Now based in Berlin, Rentmeister teaches at Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Braunschweig, and works from his Weissensee studio.</about_text_plain>

<article_plain>What can I say about Berlin that doesn't sound cheesy? I really don't know, but let me say one thing: It is great to travel, to play shows and see other cities around the world but nothing is as good as the warm feeling of coming back here.

<about_text_plain>Adam Port has always been involved in various music scenes throughout his years. Beginning his musical education in the straight edge and hardcore scene, Port quickly discovered his romantic love of vinyl. But as he began collecting, his interests strayed from hardcore and led him to the hip hop bins. But after getting his dual turntables and mixer he realized that there was something more than hip hop: house, techno and electro. But with his love of hip hop ever present, Port began making his own electro sound with soul and rap beats incorporated.

Port is currently working on a new mixtape with DJ Baggs (Kindisch) while maintaining a steady studio practice in search of a new single. He stays busy as a part of the DJ-collective Keinemusik Crew and spends his downtime working on his blog.</about_text_plain>

<article_plain>Walther Rathenau once said: "Berlin is the parvenu amongst capitals and the capital of parvenus!"

In the 1920s, Berlin was one of the cultural centers of Europe—and as a result, also attracted people trying desperately to be something they were not. Not much has changed it seems. Many people here are very "creative" or very "important," and they really need to show it.

I am usually too busy loving and living my city to indulge in that kind of behavior. I'd like to show you a side of Berlin where trendiness and glamor are secondary but true style and sense of timeless values prevail.</article_plain>

Milan-born and raised Xaver Naudascher has lived in several large cities, having received his degree in Audio Engineering in Sydney, but when he arrived to Berlin in 1994 he instinctively knew: this is it! Since then he has worked here in the music business, covering many aspects of it from the creators side.

Naudascher has been teaboy, mixer, producer and artist on many productions, putting music on records, films and commercials. He currently runs his own label Supersoul Recordings (latest release being a compilation of the first two years of the labels output, a collaboration with New York's DFA Records and Cologne's techno royalty, Kompakt). The music producer's company Supersoul Productions provides music for films, advertising and art installations, including clients like Adidas, Stella McCartney, Al Jazeera, Tom Tykwer, Wolfgang Becker and Robert Wilson.

Naudascher received his first platinum record for the production efforts on Die Fantastischen Vier's album Fornika in 2007.</about_text_plain>

<article_plain>Berlin's international identity as the birthplace of techno has invited a slew of DJs to uproot themselves and find a home in our electronic Hauptstadt. With over 200 clubs strewn throughout the city, getting behind the booth at one of Berlin's famed haunts is dream for many that rarely comes true. In walks Spaniard Hugo Capablanca—in lightening speed (we're talking no more than two years) he was spinning at some of the city's iconic clubs with countless residencies and a loyal following.

Mixing alongside taste-makers including Justice, Headman, Klaxons, WhoMadeWho and countless others, Capablanca came to Berlin in search of an "open minded, sexy, experimental metropolis." He certainly found what he was looking for, establishing a dynamic relationship with the city: "This city fuels my persona and I fuel the city."

Capablanca's label, Discos Capablanca, fuses Chicago house, psychedelic sounds, tropicalia, disco and whatever else inspires the 29-year old DJ. Listen to the sounds of Capablanca's scratching as he expounds on his favorite spots around the city.</article_plain>
<about_text_plain>Label owner of Discos Capablanca, Hugo Capablanca's first 12" received unanimous critical acclaim and was massively supported by the likes of Optimo, Ewan Pearson and Tiga.

<article_plain>Berlin is pretty rad. But if I'm here too long, I start getting bored. Then I have to escape (or at least try to), only to realize as soon as I'm away, I'm already thinking about going back home again. Why? Because I was born and raised here. And I love it. It's where my friends live. (And it's where I know where to pee in public.)</article_plain>

<article_plain>Berlin: The phoenix that rises from the ashes.

I've always wanted to be here...and I paid my dues and now call this place my home. Especially as a New Zealander, I take extra pride in the words "Ich bin ein Berliner."

	Welcome to Bang Bang Berlin!</article_plain>
<about_text_plain>Hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, Paul James Snowden (38) lives and works in Berlin. Wielding a powerful mix of classical fine arts studies, corporate advertising agency schooling, and a dedication to music forms, his style could be described as meshing the simple, radical, and classic into one fabric. In the end, this could be simply called "art".

Snowden's work covers an extensive area of operation, concentrating specifically on youth culture and communicating design as a way of life which must be true, vivid and real.</about_text_plain>

<article_plain>Living in the desert of inner-city life can be disturbing and confusing for a pleasure seeking dog like me... but if you're as lucky as I am, meeting a human willing to show you his inspired view of Berlin can change all that. My best friend, Daniel, has hooked me up; from naming me Jesus (I get a lot of attention), to taking me to the best butcher in town, my world has opened in the most exciting way. I might see in black and white, but I feel the full color spectrum of this vibrant city's activity. Let's take a stroll!

<about_text_plain>Photographer Daniel Josefsohn is best known for his legendary MTV campaign, which bolstered his career overnight. More recently his work has extended to celebrity portraits, fashion shoots, as well as capturing fleeting looks of anonymous individuals for a wide range of magazines. Josefsohn has won several Lead Awards in different categories, including best fashion photography. He currently lives with his beautiful wife and architect, Rauschi, in Berlin-Mitte.</about_text_plain>

<article_plain>She might not know it, but Sumi Ha defies the growing standard that fashion begets snobbery. Assuredly relaxed, with breezy airs about her, Ha has cultivated a personal look that's more art-centric than glamorous, more Woody Allen than Edie Sedgwick—not surprising for someone who's been quoted as saying she'd rather spend money on food than on trendy garments.

"People have more courage to do their thing in Berlin than somewhere else," Ha wrote in an email, and one look at her role as the harbinger of Berlin's flourishing fashion scene nails this point home. At IDEAL showroom for avant-garde fashion, founded in 2006, Ha started to feature the likes of Swedish knitwear designer Sandra Backlund, Romanian Rozalb de Mura and wunderkind Eric Lebon on the catwalk one year before the city's Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. IDEAL closed down this year, succumbing to corporate competition, but Ha's inspired Best Shop, founded in 2004, still surges on strong today.

Ha's notoriously coy about what lies in the future, but it's likely to involve staying put in Berlin: "It's the only place I feel comfortable to live in." In the meantime, find her at some of her favorite destinations in town.</article_plain>
<about_text_plain>Sumi Ha owns one of the most progressive fashion stores in Berlin: Best Shop, where she introduces new avant-garde designers every 3threemonths, updating the normal concept of fixed designers represented.

Sumi is also the promoter of IDEAL, the international showroom focusing on vanguard fashion and pushing Berlin into a city that's worth considering fashionwise.</about_text_plain>

<about_text_plain>Mathias Modica a.k.a. Munk has been releasing his own music as well as records by other artists such as WhoMadeWho, Box Codax (the solo project of Nick MacCarthy of Franz Ferdinand) and Headman on his little label Gomma for several years.

The label (according to NME: “Gomma is like a German DFA!”) is part of a new scene of freestyle labels that connect music with alternative art and underground fashion, such as Ed Banger records, Tigersushi and Kitsune in Paris, DFA in New York and Eskimo in Belgium.

The DJ Style of the Munk boys has been described as the new "post minimal“ sound. It’s a mix of new German and French house records, Italian Cosmic stuff and old, rare leftfield disco records. It’s hard, futuristic disco.</about_text_plain>

<about_text_plain>There have been many masters of fashion photography, but there are only a few that have maintained their presence over the decades. Jacques Olivar (*1941) is one of them. His portraits subtly tread a territory between fashion, pin-up, and Hollywood. Every generation needs an updated version of the photographs one might traditionally find in a soldier’s locker or a sailor’s room, but Olivar decidedly widens this target group with his exquisite, upgraded pinups. These icons are there for all to take pleasure in; they are the contemporary form of glamour.</about_text_plain>

<article_plain>Berlin is a blast. It reminds me of New York in the 1980s and '90s, but has, of course, its own distinctive flavor. I think Berlin is the most vibrant city in Europe. London's a rip off. Paris is arrogant... Berlin is like a big, creative bomb that's ready to detonate.</article_plain>
<about_text_plain>Well known for his infamous re-tooling of comic heroes (ie. Superman, Batman, The Incredible Hulk, etc), Kostas' re-appropriation of Americana comic iconography allows one to approach these characters in novel ways. Kostas replicates these characters so well, in fact, he seems to pay homage to the creators of these comic figures, and at the same time sheds some sort of underlying commentary on how these characters are registered within the context of street art vs. pop art. Yet make no mistake—Kostas is an artist in many mediums. His work receives influence from fashion to punk rock to, as Kostas puts it, “open seditions.” His work is avidly sought from a handful of collectors, comprised of private/corporate and celebrity sectors.</about_text_plain>

<article_plain>I think Berlin sucks big time. Well, at least during wintertime—gray skies, dark clouds, grumpy people. Thanks to my booker, though, I only come back here during the rare sunny blue summer days. And that makes all the difference!

	Ciao tutti!</article_plain>
<about_text_plain>Wolfram MarfloW Eckert, a talented DJ and producer who has played some of the world’s finest clubs with his Italo antics—not to mention being a mix-robot on the Cybernetic Broadcasting System—runs the Diskokaine record label.

The label is still a fledgling, with just one release under its belt. But from its inception, Diskokaine has been an imprint true to its roots. First off, the Diskokaine records look like they were designed by the forefathers of Italo Disco with their bloated label lettering and flashy sleeves. Put the needle on a track and find that every aspect of the Diskokaine label gets your senses going.

<article_plain>Berlin for me means traveling back in time. Back in the days, when the city still was separated and my side was the one behind the wall. Wasn´t a bad childhood either. Coming back here, playing at the Panne, i am stunned by the enormous change without loosing the adventurous feel of it. Definitely worth a visit, then and now.</article_plain>
<about_text_plain>As an accomplished composer, producer and remixer, Patrick Pulsinger is known for traveling an idiosyncratic path through diverse fields of contemporary music. Always on the lookout for new challenges, his recordings range from superbly crafted analogue techno to free-form jazz, and while following him treading such diverse genres might prove as well a challenge for the listener, it will be a journey well worth the effort. More then 10 years ago Patrick founded Cheap Records together with long-time partner Erdem Tunakan, establishing the label as one of Europe's most innovative outlets for electronic music with his own (co-)productions under guises such as iO or Sluts'n'Strings & 909 and by signing artists such as Robert Hood or Christopher Just.</about_text_plain>
