Since 1981, he has been Professor for Photography at University of Applied Sciences, Department of Design, in Aachen. He has collected contemporary art together with his wife Gaby Schuermann and has been curator of more than twenty exhibitions from his art collection since 1987.
He recently moved to Berlin in a new home, built by the star architect David Adjaye. And Wilhelm Schuermann curated also the small pavillon next to the Volksbühne. Three artists are very close to his heart and are represented in his collection: Martin Kippenberger, Nairy Baghramian and Franz West. Schuermann started his collectors journey back in 1955 with a piece from Josef Sudek. His latest aquisition was Michael Kunze’s “Und dann kam Jack Robinson” in 2006.
