Built in 1924 as an electricity plant, Humboldt Umspannwerk was quickly abandoned and left unused. The giant red brick complex, with its hidden passages and science fiction-like design elements, was refurbished in the early ‘90s and currently serves as a venue for art exhibitions, photo and film shoots, large-scale parties and other cultural events.
Once inside, you feel as if you’ve entered a secret garden, one filled with heavy metal doors, nobs and pullies, circular coves, giant leaden windows and interior courtyards. The walls are adorned with historic metal signage that instills a nostalgia for the days of the industrial revolution. Make sure to head down to the basement to the former control room, which now houses a chic futuristic cocktail bar, complete with overhead ovular windows.
