A world famous trove of antique treasures, the Pergamon Museum sits astride Museum Island and offers three remarkable collections: the Collection of Classical Antiquities, the Museum of the Ancient Near East, and the Museum of Islamic Art. Renovation of the three winged building, originally completed in 1930 after designs by Alfred Messel, began this year and was overseen by renowned architect OM Ungers. The monumental reconstructions of archaeological building ensembles, including the Pergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus and the Ishtar Gate of Babylon, as well as exhibitions of modern Asian art and design, make the Pergamon a worthwhile favorite with visitors and indeed scholars alike.
