Jean-Baptiste Grenouille from Patrick Süsskind’s novel Perfume might have found a kindred spirit in Sissel Tolaas. The Norwegian scent artist is more like an archivist, traveling around the world in search of memories, stories, people and places to capture through their odors. With a library of over 7,800 scents, Tolaas plays with how smell is performed, detected, and reacted to.
For her installation at Torstrasse 166, Tolaas investigated the stories captured within the apartment and took the scents created in her Berlin laboratory to animate the memories. Do take a shower beforehand—there will be a lot of sniffing around.
