By this point it’s clear: Berlin is no longer stuck with the stigma of bad German food. In fact, there is great food in this city, from fast food to haute cuisine. While it may be culturally taboo to not sit down for meals, there is a growing number of great places to grab a meal on the go.
With an abundance of dönerladen and the more traditional currywurst stands, finding the best schnell snacks can be a matter of trial and error. Sometimes that error can be very unpleasant, though several gems warrant another visit. We guide you through a culinary tour around the world, street-style, that’ll soon have you screaming: “Seconds!”
Das Hühnerhaus
Spinning chickens never fail to satisfy
When our friends invited us to join them at the bar-packed streets by Görlitzer Bahnhof in Kreuzberg, we did. But we must confess: We did it for the chicken. Salty, moist, crunchy, perfectly juicy, the spinning rotisserie birds here spin our minds.
Grillwalker
Mobile wurst
The hilarious one-man-stands that are the mobile grillers patrolling busy pedestrian areas make some of the best bratwurst in town. They better—their lives rest on it.
Chau A Huong Viet
Pleasantly snacking on
The Ba Bao (a bun with pork, beef, onions, vermicelli noodles, mushrooms, and a hard boiled egg), warmed up while we wait, gets us going every time. Take some to go—this slice of Vietnam is in the deep eastern edge of the city.
Imren Grill
Döner you can trust
You know that German phrase, “Gestern hat ein Döner mein Leben gerettet”? (Ahem: “A döner saved my life last night.”) Imren has lifted us out of that dark hole many a time, and has even cured our hunger pangs in—gasp!—the daylight, too.
Adonis
The freshest falafel
Adonis is Berlin’s handsome youth when it comes to falafel. Once the sandwich is lifted from the panini press where it is finished off, you’re in for a wild ride filled with fresh herbs, pickled goodies, and just-fried chickpea balls. Beware: Adonis garners a cult following. Let’s hope you live nearby.
Beckers Fritten
Where fries are number one
Even we will brave the sex workers and pub-crawling tourists on Oranienburgerstrasse to eat the fries at Beckers Fritten, perfectly crisp and salted, smothered in creative condiments. And yes, even we will smile at the crabby lady who mans the stand, because her hand is the hand that feeds.
Tandur Lasan
Mesmerizing flatbread
Call us addicts, but Tandur Lasan’s bread is like crack: no matter what time of day it is, we have to pick up a fresh piece of bread with sheep’s milk cheese, and we always want another. Immediately.
Elburai
Kartoum to Juba via deliciousness
Whenever we’re down, we swing by this joint for the delectable savory fare and some of the friendliest service in town to cheer us up. Oh, of course they’re not German—they’re North African here.
Curry 36
Wat schönret gibt et nich
The “wurst” experience ever? More like the best: chew on legendary, finger-licking good currywurst at this Kreuzberg kiosk.
Dolce Pizza
Foccacia, capiche?
Pizza may be the notorious street food of New York, but Dolce Pizza’s out-of-the-oven baked focaccia covered in fresh toppings think outside the triangle and suddenly make those Big Apple slices seem awfully gooey.
Burgermeister
Master of burgers
We’re usually wary of “special sauce” surprises, but we’ll make an exception for the juicy patties at Burgermeister. Make sure to give yourself a few minutes to digest before heading over to nearby 103 Club, or you’ll be in for a ground-meat mess.
