Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden—the two Wesleyan graduates, who make up the band MGMT—first hit the indie rock scene in 2007 when they played at New York City’s CMJ festival that quickly made them buzz words (even if they were a bit green). Their psychedelic rock album, Oracular Spectacular dropped in January to incredible acclaim; later, a performance on David Letterman and at the SXSW festival cemented their status as the hottest indie rock band way back in 2008.
So excuse us when we say that the Brooklyn boys’ music, most notably hit singles like the we-are-immortal ditties Time to Pretend and Kids, all sound a bit old to us. They’ve just been on our radar too long. But if they’re still new to you, catch MGMT live tonight when they play at a sure to be packed house at Columbiahalle.
