With more than 30 lineup changes (and some 20 or so more musicians occasionally jamming with them) British band The Fall has become almost as renowned for its infamous revolving door as its punk/garage/New Wave tunes. Almost.

Headed up by the enigmatic and explosive Mark E. Smith, The Fall started out in the highly fertile Manchester music scene of the mid ‘70s brandishing a sound that previewed post-punk rock’n’roll a few years before punk itself even gave way. Never gaining any real mainstream success (but nevertheless becoming the favorite band of the BBC’s John Peel), The Fall gathered a cult status thanks in part to its ferocious sound, indecipherable lyrics and the mythic-like proportions of its frontman.

Now comprised of Smith and his wife Elena as well as musicians Pete Greenway, Dave Spurr and Keiron Melling, The Fall’s enduring ability is perhaps best summed up by the title of the 2004 compilation: 50,000 Fall fans can’t be wrong.Quote_transparent
