DESCRIPTION:Schlechtriem Brothers\nRosa-Luxemburg-Straße 27
\n\n10178 Berl
in\nPhone: +493023257885\n\nSchlechtriem Brothers Berlin is pleased to pres
ent a show of new photographs \nby the New York based artist David Benjamin
Sherry. \nFor his first Berlin solo show entitled “Sensate Transcendency
”\, David \nBenjamin Sherry uses traditional color processes and strictly
analog darkroom \nmanipulations to capture the breath-taking majesty of Am
erican National \nParks such as Death Valley\, Yosemite and the Olympic Qui
nault Rain Forest \n(to name a few). These photographs\, all taken over the
course of a month long \nroad trip in the Pacific Northwest\, were then in
ternalized and reconstructed in \nthe controlled environment of his studio.
Thus\, the resulted images form the \nbackdrop and mise en scène for a ca
st of Arcadian dwellers and wandering \nmystics with all the pomp and glitt
er of a James Bidgood set. The marriage of \nnatural landscapes and control
led portraiture merge fact and fiction\, depicting \nSherry’s fantastical
world. \nSherry’s photo manipulations of panoramic landscapes call to mi
nd the \nHudson River School Painters\, such as Frederic Church\, in their
depiction of \nthe American landscape as a pastoral setting\, where human b
eings and nature \npeacefully coexist. But where the Hudson River School pa
inters saw the hand \nof God\, Sherry sees the frontier of the occult\, whe
re the paranormal is the rule \nand there is no exception. \nThe imperfect
ions of his analog\, darkroom and film manipulations are akin to \na marria
ge of opposites-the precision of film vs. the frailty of human touch – \n
the occult proposition of a naked man at peace with a magical nature. His t
otal \nrejection of digital manipulation is a devotion to the classic roman
ce of \nphotography and implies the connection with the caring hand and the
\nhandmade creation. \nDavid Benjamin Sherry\, born 1981 in Upstate New Yo
rk\, has exhibited work \nat Team Gallery\, New York\, Andrew Kreps Gallery
 \, New York\, Mitchell-Innes \n&#38\; Nash\, New York\, China Art Objects\,
Los Angeles and has had a solo show at \nGalerie Lisa Ruyter\, Vienna. His
work has been featured in magazines such \nas V-man\, Dazed and Confused\,
 I-D\, He\, Tokion\, and Qvest. Sherry received \nhis BFA Photography from R
ISD\, Rhode Island\, and his MFA Photography \nfrom the Yale School of Phot
 ography.\n\n
