When we last left Dominic Wilcox, he was puttering around the U.K., building absurd model airplanes. Now he wants to take you to, Niketown! Well, Niketown, London.

Besides running a Nike iD session on May 9 at the mega store in London (stop by and say hi), Wilcox has been working on a project for Nike’s Art of Football put together by their 1/1 collective. By painstakingly gluing together plastic footballers (read: soccer players), he’s made a tiny Cave for your trainers (read: sneakers), a 3D piece called ‘Top Corner’, and a couple of blocks of toy athletes. Wilcox writes on his blog, ‘Gluing the footballers was certainly a challenge. It became almost a meditative process.

At one point I was in ‘the zone’ to the point that a super glue tube got stuck to the side of my finger, yet instead of spending time removing it, I picked up another tube and continued on. Wow.

Since the dawn of time, art has always shown us where our culture was heading. And in every corner of the world, football is more than just a game; it’s a theatre of humanity, it’s food for the soul, it’s poetry in motion. In a word, it’s a way of life. Can these two divine forms of expression overlap and inspire each other? Nike thinks so.

Football has inspired each new generation of artists to push the bounds of creativity. In 2008 SHOWstudio and the 1/1 Associates challenge all enthusiasts to bring a new, 100% original interpretation to the beautiful game. Every artist or feels-like-an-artist can submit a piece of art for the chance to exhibit at the 1/1 Art of Football Show in Basel, alongside some of the world’s most respected talents. There’s just one rule: Be True.

Eleven finalists will be chosen to exhibit a new piece inspired by ART OF FOOTBALL alongside 1/1 curator SHOWstudio. One final winner’s work will be immortalized by Nike on a new limited edition series of Nike Dunks.

About the artist

Dominic Wilcox is an artist, designer and everything in between. He doesn’t specialise in any particular creative area or medium, instead he comes up with ideas first then thinks about what is the best way to make them reality.
