Adieu Berlin Fashion Week 2010

English_40x40

Say what you will about Berlin Fashion Week, there’s no denying it’s spot on the city’s cultural calendar is well earned. Tens of thousands of people filed through Tempelhof Airport for Bread & Butter, the city’s bars, clubs and alternative venues fired up with endless parties and showcases, the use of historic Bebelplatz as an event location triggered debate which had politicians weighing in and Sudanese supermodel Alek Wek brought the international celebrity factor as she strode the catwalk for designer Anja Gockel.

The well established names may have dominated (and hosted spectacles-check out Michael Michalsky’s stellar collaborative show with Lala Berlin and Kaviar Gauche at Friedrichstadtpalast above), it was arguably the efforts of the younger, newer designers that set a more rebellious tone. While common themes and colors laced throughout (cream, black, brown, high waists, exaggerated shoulders and seldom use of prints), they were given new context when in the hands of newcomers.

Munich-based designer Marcel Otertag impressed with his jutting, angular designs and intricate attention to detail, Sam Frenzel broke every mold possible with his audacious, bold, form-bending creations and JULIAANDBEN’s layered styling and subtle reworkings of dress/shawl and shirt/pant combinations stood out among the crop of avant-gardists who exhibited at the Designer Scouts show at .HBC.

With glittering memories of trench coats, satin boleros and cascading headpieces all that remain, we bid adieu to the winter edition Berlin Fashion Week 2010.
